Dental implants may require a sinus lift procedure for placement

Dental implants may require a sinus lift

Dental implants are a wonderful option for many of our patients at the Peninsula Dental Implant Center. However, when it comes to placing dental implants in the upper jaw, it is important for the dentist to x-ray the mouth to check for the location of the sinuses. Patients may require an extra procedure known as a sinus lift.

What is a sinus lift?

A sinus lift is a procedure dedicated to addressing the location of the sinus cavities prior to placing dental implants. The maxillary sinus is sometimes too close to the upper jaw to allow the implants to be successfully placed. There is no “standard size” for this cavity so it is important for Dr. Shivani Gupta to have x-rays completed to see if there needs to be augmentation performed. The augmentation itself involves the placement of bone into the area to provide a solid foundation for the implant to derive its strength and durability. This is often done for dental implants placed on the upper arch.

Benefits of a sinus lift

The advantages of having a sinus lift procedure performed at Peninsula Dental Implant Center include:

  • The ability to place a dental implant into the upper jaw
  • The chance to have a permanent tooth replacement that does not become problematic
  • Eliminating the need for alternative tooth replacement options such as dentures or bridges
