Find relief with wisdom teeth extraction in Millbrae

Wisdom Teeth Extraction at Peninsula Dental Implant Center in Millbrae Area

If you’re living in Millbrae and have tooth pain or crowding, you may need a dentist for wisdom teeth extraction. Even if your wisdom teeth aren’t causing issues right away, they may be problematic further down the line if they cause crowding or malocclusion. This is why it is critical that you have routine evaluations done by your dentist or through the Peninsula Dental Implant Center with Dr. Shivani Gupta.

How wisdom teeth affect your oral health

Your wisdom teeth are the third set of molars, and they typically erupt between the ages of 17-25. Each tooth in your mouth is designed for a different function, and these final molars were necessary for early humans to chew tough food like bark, leaves, and uncooked meat. As our diets change, so do our mouths, and while not everyone develops wisdom teeth, some people don’t have space in their mouths when they do develop.

This can cause problems in a few different ways. Either the wisdom teeth become trapped under the gum line, or they push your other teeth too close together as they erupt. They are often more susceptible to infection, and they can cause a lot of pain and discomfort if they aren’t removed. Dr. Gupta will typically evaluate your wisdom teeth during a routine dental visit and may recommend extraction or surgical removal to protect your oral health.

Wisdom teeth removal and when our team may suggest it

Your procedure may be a simple extraction for the teeth that are erupted, or it may require an incision for impacted teeth. You may need to have your wisdom teeth broken and removed in pieces depending on their placement. Dr. Gupta will go over the details of your procedure so you know what to expect, and you can choose local anesthetic or mild sedation depending on your comfort level.

Dr. Gupta may prescribe medicine for pain management or recommend over the counter medicines to help with pain and inflammation. You may also use cold packs to numb the area and reduce swelling. You’ll need to keep the extraction site clean and clear of debris and watch for bleeding. Dr. Gupta will supply gauze and recommend a soft diet for the week or two following the procedure.
