Dentist near Palo Alto Explains the benefits of immediate dental implants

Immediate Dental Implant Benefits

If you’ve lost one or more teeth recently, immediate dental implants may be a fast, effective solution to restore the function and aesthetics of your smile. At Peninsula Dental Implant Center near Palo Alto, we offer this solution to many of our patients who are seeking to replace lost teeth. Traditional dental implants typically require several months of healing and multiple procedures before the treatment is complete, whereas immediate implants allow patients to leave the office with fully functional and natural-looking teeth in just one visit.

Immediate Implants Explained

With a traditional multi-step dental implant procedure, the implants are surgically placed into the jawbone and left to heal for a period of up to six months. During this healing time, called osseointegration, the jawbone fuses around the implant for stable support to the final restoration. After that procedure, the patient can return to have an abutment, or connector, attached to the dental implant. Again, the area is allowed to heal for several weeks before the final restoration such as a crown or bridge is attached. The entire process can take up to a year and require multiple dental appointments.

With immediate dental implants, the dentist places the temporary crown on the same day as inserting the dental implant.

How the procedure works:

The first step is a consultation where we review medical records and perform a thorough examination including diagnostic tests such as CT scans and X-rays. This allows us to map out the plan for the procedure.

On the day of surgery, you’ll receive anesthesia. Depending on the situation, it could be IV sedation or local anesthesia. With the area numb, the dentist will insert the implant into the jawbone. Once the implant is stable, an abutment and a temporary crown are immediately attached to the implant and surgery is complete.

Following the surgery, there will be some pain and discomfort after the anesthesia wears off. Prescription pain medications, ice packs, and rest can help with pain management. After several months of healing, the final permanent crown can be attached to the dental implant.

Benefits of immediate implants

Here are some of the benefits of immediate dental implants

Requires less time

The biggest benefit is that the procedure is completed in a single visit. This cuts down on the amount of time spent returning for follow-up appointments, and most importantly, the amount of time spent with missing teeth.

Improved fit

When the crown is attached to the implant immediately, the gum tissue often grows around it, making the entire restoration look and feel more natural. In some cases, soft tissue remodeling may be needed after immediate dental implants.

Can be used for total restoration

Immediate dental implants can also be used with full tooth replacement options such as dentures. This “all on four” procedure involves the use of four strategically placed implants to support entire arches of teeth.

Candidates for immediate implants

Candidates for immediate implants should be in good oral and overall health. Individuals who smoke, have a chronic disease, or have autoimmune disorders may not be eligible for immediate implants.

Additionally, individuals who grind their teeth may not be candidates for immediate implants as this can impact the long-term stability of the dental implant.

Whether individuals are receiving immediate or traditional implants, it’s important to maintain good oral health and overall wellness for the procedure to be a success.

Risks of immediate dental implants

The risks are the same as many other surgical dental procedures. Complications such as implant failure, infection, and pain are all possibilities.
