Fixed Upper or Lower Teeth
If you lose your teeth, you don't want to lose your oral health and your youthful facial contours as well. For people with dentures alone, these secondary problems are a very real possibility. At Peninsula Dental Implant Center, Dr. Gupta understands the consequences of tooth loss and she knows how to help her patients avoid them. Whether for one tooth or all teeth, replacement with dental implants makes sense for most of our patients.
Bone loss is one of the primary problems to occur after tooth loss. This is also one of the reasons implants are such a popular choice for tooth replacement. Because implants sit below the gums and take the place of natural roots, they are integral to the ongoing health of the jawbone itself. A dental implant not only supports the stability of a prosthetic tooth or teeth, but it also benefits bone and facial contours. To date, no other form of tooth replacement has been able to keep the bone in the jaw from breaking down.
Although the solitary makeup of implants makes it possible to replace individual teeth, there are instances in which the loss of bone stands in the way of this approach. When replacing teeth in the upper arch, Dr. Gupta is mindful not to affect the sinus cavity, which may enlarge with bone loss or with age. In cases when there is little bone into which implants can fit, strategic positioning of certain implants may be done to achieve ultimate stability without affecting the sinus cavity.
This technique often works well with a fixed dental bridge, which is designed to stay permanently in place, stabilized by implants. The bridge is made with openings to accommodate implant posts. Before affixing the bridge to the posts, Dr. Gupta will apply strong dental cement, which will hold prosthetic teeth in place for years. When the bridge is made for the lower arch, it may be stabilized with tiny, hidden fixtures.
