What can I expect when getting dental implants placed during oral surgery?

Dental Implant Specialist in San Carlos CA Area

When patients are looking to have dental implants placed in their smile for tooth replacement, they may have many questions about the procedure. Learning what to expect helps alleviate patients’ concerns about the unknown and allows them to have their procedure performed without any unforeseen surprises or issues.

Dr. Shivani Gupta of Peninsula Dental Implant Center in San Carlos, California, is a dental implant specialist who can walk you through the process.

What can I expect from my upcoming implant surgery?

First, we ensure patients are relaxed during their procedure and proudly offer both sedation and anesthesia. This ensures patients have a positive experience during their procedure and do not feel any pain. Once the patient is ready, Dr. Shivani Gupta will create an access point in the gum tissue, allowing access to the jawbone.

After the access point is created and the bone is visible, Dr. Shivani Gupta will prepare a small hole in the bone where the implant will be placed. This process involves drilling into the bone to create a space for the dental implant. Next, a titanium post is screwed into place and will serve as an artificial tooth root.

What should I expect after the procedure and for post-operative care?

Once the healing begins, the bone eventually grows around the implant post through osseointegration. This helps to secure the implant firmly in place for long-term stability. It typically takes three to six months for this healing process to be completed after which an abutment will be placed to link the final prosthetic. During this time, patients may be fitted with temporary prosthetics to maintain the appearance of their smiles.

After the healing process is complete, patients return to have their permanent prosthetics, such as crowns or full (complete) dentures, placed on top of the implants. This will restore full function and aesthetics to the smile.
